Federal authorities have one person in custody in connection with a string of suspicious packages that have targeted several public figures this week, according to a top Justice Department spokesperson.
Sarah Isgur Flores, the agency’s public affairs director, tweeted: “We can confirm one person is in custody,” adding that a news conference will be held later this afternoon to provide more information.

Citing anonymous police officials, multiple news outlets have reported that the man is Cesar Sayoc, a 56-year-old resident of Aventura, Florida.

President Donald Trump also confirmed that law enforcement officials had apprehended a suspect and taken him into custody.
“These terrorizing acts are despicable and have no place in our country,” Trump said at the top of a White House event Friday. He again made a call for unity, as he did earlier in the week.
The possible arrest comes after two additional packages containing potential explosives were intercepted by authorities. The packages were addressed to New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker and former National Intelligence Director James Clapper, respectively. The package intended for Booker was intercepted in Florida; the other, for Clapper, was recovered in Manhattan.

The latest discoveries bring the total of recovered packages to 12. Other figures targeted by the packages, which contained possible explosive devices, include President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Vice President Joe Biden, among others. Authorities have said there could have been more packages circulating in the mail system.
Beyond the similarities of packages — all in manila envelopes, containing black pipe bombs and featuring Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz as the return addressee — the targets have all been prominent Democratic leaders and critics of President Donald Trump.
